Steve Spurrier
Steve Spurrier graduated from Science Hill High School in 1963 where he was All-State in football, basketball, and baseball. He was the starting quarterback in his junior and senior years. Spurrier played football at the University of Florida, where he was an All-American twice. He was named Sophomore of the Year (1964), UPI Player of the Year, SEC Player of the Year, won the Walter Camp Memorial Trophy, and the Heisman Trophy (1966). Spurrier was selected in the 1st round of the NFL draft in 1967 by the San Francisco 49ers. He played 10 years in the NFL before becoming a coach. Spurrier was head coach for the Tampa Bay Bandits in the USFL, Duke University (3 seasons), University of Florida (12 seasons), University of South Carolina (10.5 seasons), and the Washington Redskins. He had 122 total college wins, and 82% career winning percentage. Spurrier was names SEC Coach of the Year 5 times, coached 1 ACC Conference Championship, 6 SEC Conference Championships with 8 Eastern Division Titles, and 1 National Championship. He was the first Heisman winner to coach a Heisman winner (Danny Wuerffel in 1996). He is 2nd to Bear Bryant with most SEC wins. He is only one of only 4 players to be voted into the College Hall of Fame as a player and a coach. Spurrier was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a player (1986) and as a coach (2017) and into the National Federation of State High School Associations Hall of Fame (2016). He is in the Florida-Georgia Hall of Fame, the University of Florida Athletic Hall of Fame, and is in the Florida Football Ring of Honor. |
