Johnny Mills
Johnny Mills graduated from Elizabethton High School in 1962 and is considered one of the best football athletes from Elizabethton. In 1961 he was an honorable mention All-Big 7. In 1962, Mills was the starting quarterback and was named 1st Team All-Big 7 and honorable mention All-State. He was the team MVP and also named best defensive back. Mills played wide receiver and tight end at the University of Tennessee (1964-66) where he lettered for 3 years. He led the Vols in receiving in 1966 with 725 yards and 4 touchdowns, and had a single game total of 225 yards which was a long-standing single game record, which would not be broken for 30 years. He had a college career 76 receptions for 1120 yards. Mills was selected All-Southern Conference in 1966. He was drafted by the San Diego Chargers. Mills later became an assistant coach at University of Tulsa and then at Kaywood High School. He then became the head coach at Harlan High School. Mills has been inducted into the All-Northeast Tennessee Hall of Fame, Elizabethton High Athletics Hall of Fame, and Carter County Sports Hall of Fame (2012). |
