Hal Miller
Hal Miller graduated from Dobyns-Bennett in 1948, and earned All-State, All-Southern, and All-America honors in football. In 1947 he was a member of the Dobyns-Bennett football team that was not scored on during the regular season. Miller received an athletic scholarship to Georgia Tech where he lettered 3 seasons, was All-SEC selection 2 years, and was a consensus All-American as offensive tackle his senior year. In 1952 he co-captained the Georgia Tech National Championship team. He capped his college career by being voted to play in the College All-Star Game in Chicago (1953). Upon graduation from Georgia Tech, Miller was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the NFL draft. He played 1 season before entering military service. Following his stint in the military, Miller returned to Kingsport, TN where he had a successful career with Tennessee Eastman Company, retiring in 1993. Miller was inducted into the Tennessee State Hall of Fame (1991); inducted into Georgia Tech Athletic Hall of Fame (1992); and into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame (1993). Frank Broyles, athletic director, University of Arkansas wrote of Miller in 1992, “Based on my 42 years as a collegiate coach and administrator, I would rate Hal Miller as equal to - if not the best - of any offensive tackle I have had the pleasure of coaching or watching play.” |
