Hal Gordon Littleford, Jr.
Hal Littleford was an All-State football player at Tennessee High School and lettered in both baseball and football. Littleford was a star tailback at the University of Tennessee in 1947, 1948, and 1949. He was All-SEC in 1948 and was selected as the team captain in 1949. Littleford became an assistant football coach at East Tennessee State University in 1951, before becoming the head coach in 1954, where he led his team to the Volunteer Athletic Conference Championship and he was voted coach of the year. Littleford began his lifelong service to his country after high school by enlisting in the US Army for WWII duties. He returned, after graduating from UT, to serve during the Korean War, and retired with a rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Littleford served as President of the University of Tennessee Alumni Association and was named an honorary lifetime member of the University of Tennessee Athletic Board. He was elected to the Johnson City Commission in 1965 and served as Mayor (1967-69). Littleford was active in the Johnson City Kiwanis Club. He was inducted into Tennessee Sports Hall Of Fame in 1991. |
