AB Clevenger
AB Clevenger is only the 2nd person to obtain the National Football Foundation Mountain Empire Lifetime Achievement Award. Clevenger graduated from Ketron High School in 1959 where he was a 4-year Letterman. He was All-Conference in the Rotherwood and Upper Lakes Conferences. Clevenger played for the University of Tennessee (1960-61) and East Tennessee State University (1962-64), being named ETSU best Offensive Lineman in 1963. Following graduation from ETSU, he coached at Church Hill High School with the legendary Coach JW Salley. In 1965, Clevenger went to play in the Canadian Football League for the Winnipeg Bluebombers, then played for Charleston Rockets in the CFL. Clevenger became the Head Coach of Lynn View High School (1966-69) before becoming the Head B-Team coach at Tennessee High School. While at Tennessee High, he also served as the head coach of the wrestling team and boys and girls track teams - Clevenger started the girls track team and wrestling programs for the Vikings. His football teams became 2-time State Champions (1971 and 1972) and won the National Championship in 1972. The prestigious National Championship award is displayed in the Mountain Empire Football Hall of Fame. Clevenger was instrumental in helping restart the East Tennessee State University football program in 2014. He is an active member of the Mountain Empire Chapter of the National Football Foundation and served and the inaugural chairperson of the scholar-athlete awards program and golf tournament. |
